| OLIVER Mtukudzi begins a two-week tour of the UK this week with at least one show already sold out.
The Zimbabwean superstar arrived in London on Sunday on what his fans are billing the “breakthrough tour” as it is the first time the singer will play in front of mostly white audiences.
In all, Mtukudzi will stage 10 concerts across England, starting with a performance at The Sage in Gateshead on Tuesday, March 3. more |

Three men accused of murdering South African reggae singer Lucky Dube have gone on trial in Johannesburg. Julius Xowa, Thabiso Maroping and Sfiso Mhlanga are also facing charges of unlawful possession of firearms and attempted hijacking. more |

The tearful and prayerful pastor’s son joined the life of the jet-set after winning the vote of millions of the show’s viewers around the world. Despite concerted efforts by the Zimbabwe Government to muzzle critical voices, Zimbabwean theatre never runs dry of politically sensitive plays. A new play, "The two leaders I know" premiered at the recently concluded Harare International Festival of arts (HIFA). The one-man stage production acted by talented actor and theatre producer Daves Guzha is both sharply satirical and a moving personal evaluation of the political consequences of Ian Smith, the last leader of rebel Rhodesia and Robert Mugabe the current leader of Zimbabwe currently fighting with all he has to remain the leader of Zimbabwe. more |

The 2008 edition of the Harare International Festival of Arts (HIFA) which runs from 29 April to 4 May has kicked off in Harare having been dealt a serious body blow by the pullout by at least five key performers due to the volatile political situation engulfing Zimbabwe. The performers who have withdrawn from HIFA 2008 include The London Festival Opera, the all-women Les Amazonnes de Guinee from West Africa, Canada's woman performer of the year Angie Nussey and Pascal Danae, a famous musician from France. more |

Ryan Cohan Quartet, a U.S. jazz musical group, will tour Zimbabwe beginning February 17, 2008. During the tour, the Chicago-based group- composer and pianist Ryan Cohan, Geof Bradfield on saxophone, Lorin Cohen on bass and Kobie Watkins on drums– will hold workshops and educational sessions with students and musicians as well as perform concerts in Harare and Norton. The tour is part of The Rhythm Road- American Music Abroad program, co-sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and the Jazz at Lincoln Center program, which offers professional American jazz and urban music performers the chance to perform their music in countries with limited exposure to American culture. more |

M-Net is bringing a new season of Idols to DStv screens soon and producers of the blockbuster reality series are already hard at work. Reps of the show\'s production team WaterFront Television visited Zimbabwe early in February to hold auditions for the all-important Idols personalities...the series host and judges. A casting session was held at the Meikles Hotel in Harare and attracted a large cross-section of television talent, who were invited to attend and showcase their skills. Candidates must have been hoping to make a good impression knowing that whoever did will find themselves in the spotlight when Idols launches on-air in April. more |

THE boys of the famous London Oratory School Schola have joined forces with the children of a Zimbabwean orphanage to record an enchanting version of Silent Night. The CD with accompanying video was released on 1st December and will be downloadable from iTunes from the 18th December. THE appeal and allure of Chimurenga music king, Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo rescued a potentially disastourous show at London’s Stratford Rex arena on Saturday night. It had all the ingredients of a good show - quality performances, massive support and mostly clean music - but the highly anticipated Chaputika concert clearly lacked the core item of a good sound system, which was in very short supply. A poor sound system at a venue whose appalling acoustic buffers are common knowledge; and an unconvincing crowd turn-out threatened to hamper the show. Many revellers registered the complaint that The Rex is not a favourable venue but it remains a favourite for promoters of visiting African musicians as the arena’s owners offer relaxed closing restriction. more |
